This will sound silly, but a few people might spot this review and love the idea: My wife and I needed a baby changing table. All the ones we found were flimsy, had little storage, and were ridiculously over-priced. Then we spotted this bench on sale.

It's an incredibly perfect changing table, and once the kids are done with diapers I'll get a nice workbench out of the deal! (An actual changing table would end up being gifted or donated and the investment is lost. This one will be around for years,)

I assembled it in (exactly) the time it took to watch Star Trek "First Contact". I opened the box when we hit Play, and I slid the last drawer in as the final credits rolled. I assembled it by myself while the wife scrapbooked nearby and I had no problems at all.

Everybody seems to be complaining about the drawers, but mine worked out just perfectly. They have a snug fit that will keep them from opening or closing on their own, but they slide easily.

Just be sure to go one step at a time and refer to the manual before moving to the next step. It's actually well-written.

There were a couple minor errors in the manual, like instructing you to use the hex wrench to tighten one of the phillips-head screws, but nothing that some common sense won't get you around.

The pieces are each numbered with a sticker, and the numbers correspond to the ones in the manual, both within each step and in a parts list chart at the back. A couple pieces had the wrong sticker attached, which caused a few moments of confusion, but common sense ruled the day again.

One of the reviewers mentioned attaching the vice upside down, which I thought was a silly mistake until I made it too. It seems obvious that the holes go on top, but when you happen to be looking at the bottom it's easy to forget about the holes and just move forward. But it was an easy fix to make after assembly was otherwise complete.

The bench is a little short for me, but then again I tend to think pretty much all "standard height" counters and tables are too short even though I'm average height. I fixed this while simulataneously improving the table by attaching a set of heavy-duty casters with brakes (as was suggested by another review here). Just one caveat: The legs come pre-assembled and permanently glued, so unless you have a low-clearance drill, you won't be able to drill a countersinking hole in the top of the bottom piece of wood. So either use casters that can be completely attached through the bottom, or ones with stems long enough to reach all the way through the wood.

Read all the reviews here - a few of them mention tips that kept me from making certain mistakes. But above-all, follow the manual closely. It was easy to assemble, but if you try to skip steps or do them in the wrong order, you might shoot yourself in the foot and turn it into a much bigger job.

Oh, and it's not oak. I agree with one of the other reviewers that it seems to probably be rubberwood. Which is actually awesome: I love rubberwood. It has a very nice texture, drills easily for attaching custom items to the bench, and it's an extremely renewable resource because it grows far faster than oak.

The bench went together perfectly until it came time for inserting the drawers into the overcomplicated rails, which contain all sorts of stoppers. I followed the directions exactly--matching part numbers to the drawings. It was necessary to remove the center partition and start over after popping the drawers out of the rails. When a previous reviewer said the drawers are a pain, he wasn't kidding!

The drawers also have to be wood glued at all joints--especially the bottom floors which slide open on their own.

I'm tempted to remove all of the rails and will install simple wood strips for the drawers to ride on.

I never write bad reviews, but have had to this time re: the drawer rails. An overall good product for the money, but be forewarned about the rails.

Comments about Windsor Design 60 in. 4 Drawer Hardwood Workbench:

I have had this workbench now for about 2 years. In my book it is one of the best workbenches for the Price!! The table is heavy and does not move around when working on it. The drawers work just fine and hold alot of woodcarving tools. Very easy to put together (but not on your dinning room table upside down)! Thank God for brother-in-laws showing up at the right time. I do alot for woodcarving and woodworking, this bench gets alot of heavy use and it is holding up better than I thought it would. I do not see how anyone can find fault with it.

Comments about Windsor Design 60 in. 4 Drawer Hardwood Workbench:

Great bench at an unusually low price. Spend the time and take care to assemble it right. I glued the joints and added plywood (sheer panel) along the back of the bench to add rigidly even though it seems really solid without it. Also, I'm adding a utility skin, a sheet of plywood coated with a verathane finish to add 4" of depth on the top of the bench as well as to protect the beautiful benchtop. I will secure this sheet by drilling holes through the sheet and benchtop and tapping in star nuts from underneath and using a flush machine screw from above. This can be easily removed in minutes to utilize the vise/dowel stock hold down system that will rarely get used and to eventually replace the sheet over the years to protect this beautiful bench. The only thing that I'll say negative about the bench is that the drawer slider hardware is very cheaply made so take your time and be careful when you insert the drawers. I had to call HF CS and they volunteered to replace the sliders that I broke trying to insert mine.

Overall, I really love this workbench!

Quality exceeds price. I had my doubts when I saw the assembled bench at the Harbor Freight store ... felt a bit wobbly. But I glued all joints (not required) during assembly and the piece is rock solid. Fit and finish is top notch. It adds durable function and style to my workshop.

I use this bench as an Ammo Loading bench. It works perfect. I have no need for the vise provided so it was not installed. I have 2 Dillon 650XL machines mounted on this bench along with a 24 bin parts rack. I don't use 2 of the drawers do to the loader machines location but the other 2 hold my loading dies. GREAT BENCH FOR THIS PARTICULAR PURPOSE!

Comments about Windsor Design 60 in. 4 Drawer Hardwood Workbench:

Before I got this bench I checked out a lot of the reviews on it. One thing I saw was the the wood vise was not that great. I think some people are thinking it should be as strong as a heavy cast iron vise. It is not and it is not ment to be. I like the vies a lot. Works great for holding things that you do not want to dent up using a all metal vies.

As far as the rest of the bench goes. It is nice and heavy. It goes together easy and it looks nice enough to put in a room in your house rather than in a shop. The one on display at the store looks like junk. Almost like it was made for a kids play thing. When you put your brand new one together you will be amazed how nice it looks.

Its a great bench. Get one and you will be happy why did.

I was surprised at how well it went together ! I did use wood glue on the joints however it may not needed it. The bench is very solid, I did bolt on a 3 inch riser to the legs I wanted it to be taller. The drawer slides fit very well, however I would like for them to be full length slides. The green felt in the drawer bottoms add a nice touch.
I taped the underside of the bench dog holes to prevent saw dust from entering the drawers.
I have owned this bench since last Nov, and I have given it a work out! Sawing wood, cold roll steel steel tubbing all clamped in the provided vice.

Comments about Windsor Design 60 in. 4 Drawer Hardwood Workbench:

First let me say that I purchased this work bench on sale and with a 20% off discount, for the money you cannot purchase a more stable, solid and functional work bench. I intend to use this bench for my hobby which is R/C aircraft model assembly and parts storage and therefore had no use for all the holes in the table top, I'll cover those in a moment. During assembly I was very careful in following the instructions especially those that mentioned keeping the front of the bench in mind. I should mention that there are other reviewers that have said you needn't bother drilling pilot holes, CAUTION! Drill those pilot holes; I was forced to repair a drawer side panel when the wood spilt because I didn't drill a pilot hole. So now the bench is complete with the exception of assembling and installing the drawers. After having my wife help me lift the bench and rotate it onto its feet I used the bench top to assemble the drawers, as I tried to install the first drawer it stuck in the drawer slides and when I applied a little too much force I bent the follower and 18 little bearings went rolling in every direction on my garage floor, long story short I forgot that my wife and I turned the bench when we sat it upright and so I was trying to install the drawer from the back of the bench, I found all the bearings repaired the follower and the remaining drawer installation went smoothly. To fill the surface holes in the bench I purchased about a foot of ¾ inch dowel material which is just slightly larger than the holes in the bench top, I sanded the dowel to the correct size and cut the dowel into plugs about 1/8 of inch shorter than the depth of the table, I glued the plugs in place and used a sand-able filler for that 1/8 inch gap. At this point I decide to sand and refinish the entire bench as the factory finish on my bench was terrible, some of the end pieces had little or no finish and were really rough, I sanded the entire table top, sides and legs and refinished with clear polyurethane. The bench ended up being a little more work than I anticipated, but I couldn't be happier with the final product, I have a solid and functional bench that is also very attractive. If the HF site allows I will try to upload a pic.

Comments about Windsor Design 60 in. 4 Drawer Hardwood Workbench:

Nice product. Easy to put together solo, with just a screwdriver and an allen wrench (that's included in the kit, but I used my own)

It is heavy in the box, but easy to move around once unpacked. Each piece is bubble wrapped. Nice touch. Each piece is marked with a number, to correspond with the manual.

Once assembled, it seems very sturdy and solid.

The only gripes are that I thought the instructions were not very clear, the pictures worthless.

I ended up somehow reversing something, probably the middle drawer divider, but I had already assembled the whole thing, so it was just easier to reverse the direction of the sliders for the drawers than disassemble the table.

I am very happy with this product.

BTW, HF needs to do itself a favor - at my local store, the unit that is on display is rickety and was not put together properly. I know that these things get hammered by everyone checking them out at the store, but come on, put it together and show it off!
