I park my 1600 Roadstar (750 lbs) in my shed which is about 3' off the ground. When parking the bike, I drive up the ramp and into the shed. When I want to use the bike, I have to back it out down the ramp, through my yard and onto the driveway. The shed is not wide enough for me to turn the bike around myself. I have been doing this for over 13 years. BUT, lately it has been getting more difficult to do so (60 years old) and I figure that it's only a matter of time where I dump the bike going backwards.

I decided to get the bike dolly from HF. I did some research and many have stated that it will not fit the larger cruisers. The dolly is just not long enough and the kickstand plate is not out far enough. Since the dolly is fairly inexpensive and I had a 20% off slip, I decided to try it and make any mods if need be. If it's not long enough I would add a 6" piece of steel plate in the middle of the dolly to extend it. The dolly comes in two halves.

First, many have complained about the lack of instructions. Also that the diagram is not large enough or detailed enough. The instructions are fine. The diagram is also fine. The dolly is simple to put together and took only an hour and a half. It is of very good quality. The caster wheels could be better and I may upgrade them to even smoother wheels but so far, no problem. I have a plywood floor and the bike moves easily.

The Roadstar is one of the bigger cruisers out there and guys have said that it will not fit the dolly. IT WILL FIT THE DOLLY IF YOU DO NOT USE THE STOP PINS. But you really don't need them. I do agree with others that the mfg should have made this about 12" longer and probably EVERY bike made could fit using the stop pins.

Another thing is that many say that you cannot push your bike onto the dolly, you have to drive it on. Yes you can walk it on. Make sure BOTH ramps are in the down position as this is what keeps the dolly stationary. I then can sit on the seat and walk the bike onto the dolly easily. My bike weighs in at 750lbs.
As soon as I feel the back wheel lift onto the dolly I stop. The kickstand plate is not long enough BUT it will rest on the end of the tray. I then pull the ramps up and that provides "locking" the wheels in where the bike cannot move forward or backwards. The ramps in the up position is what also provides the dolly to now move with the casters. I have a plywood floor and the dolly moves easily. Since the kickstand is not in the tray as it should, you have to be careful when pushing the dolly. But it does work.

All parts fit perfectly. The only problem I have (and I knew this going in) is that to lock most bikes, you turn bars all the way to the left or right and lock with ignition key. My bike also has a fork lock. But with this dolly you CANNOT lock the bike. I will have to devise another way to lock it down.

I can now move my bike in any direction so that I can drive it our forward. This dolly is definitely worth getting. Especially with the slip it was only $65.

I have a brand new HArley ultra classic low rider in full dress. Tires barely fit but they do. Assembled in just about 2 hours. I agree on a couple other comments like wanting a wheel chock in front. Had it for about a week now. I have been riding since 1976 and my first Honda 90. I would give it 5 stars. But twice now I have had a major issue. The first time it scared the heck out of of me.

Just after my front wheel passed the ramp and wen onto the dolly, the back ramp just rotated all by itself to the up position. I managed to get the bike up and I just thought that maybe it was a fluke and I did some thing wrong.

Today was a mess! I will never use it again until such time as I can make a mod to stop it from happening. So I rode into the garage. It is very level and very smooth. My front tire went in and was perfectly aligned. Then I hear that rear ramp fold up and placed the now rear of the dolly under the front tire. But now the front end of my bike begins to move freely. The slightest movement in balance to the left and the front end of the bike moves to the right making the balance worse. I wrestled with this bike so hard it was absolutely crazy! I could not move forward because the dolly moved forward. I could not get off the dolly because the rear ramp was not up. As the front tire "pulled" the dolly with it.

I ended up dropping my brand new Harley on its side. The first time I have EVER dropped a bike. I am so livid that I cannot see straight.

The levers for the little ramps on the end will have to have some kind of positive and secure locking mechanism so the they will never just be able to move on their own. And "yes" I did doublecheck them and thier bolts and everything else.

I regret buying a cheap one to save a few hundred for a real commercial one. Dumb to save that small amount to drop my 30k bike. Beware is all that I can say..

If I can edit later and make some kind of latching mechanism, I will re-rate but right now it is not viable and stupid to trust.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Easy way to turn your bike around in the garage

Cons

    Best Uses

    • Safe movement of motorcycle inside the garage

Comments about Pittsburgh Motorcycle 1250 lb. Capacity Low Profile Motorcycle Dolly:

After my new garage reached the point that I could no longer drive in one door and out the other. Rather that backing my FXDLi out I thought I would just turn it around in the garage. What a mistake after getting more of a workout than I wanted I relented and backed out the door and decided it was time to buy tool for the job. Then everything came together because the next day was a 25% off coupon in the mail. So a Trip to the store a little time spent assembly, I'm happy, my wife is happy because I finally bought what made moving the bike easy, and now I am able to park the bike in tight if I want to making room for other projects. Now 1) It is not difficult to assemble it has to be one of the easiest to put together (2) with my bike it's a tight fit in length but still works fine also my bike is lower than stock so I have a little clearance problem with my kickstand but it's still workable and at some point I may make a modification when it doesn't interfere with riding (3) I have a smooth cement finish and with the weight of the bike you have to push it to move it which I think is safer you don't want to get 800+ pounds moving like a greased pig and then try to stop it inside a garage.

Space is at a premium in our garage, and this makes it very easy to push the bike completely into a corner. Very sturdy. Well worth the price. '71 BMW R60/5 fits perfectly.

We have 3 Harleys & an SUV in our small garage, My Wife has a '11 RK & a 95 Heritage & she likes to rotate out her riding, now she can get to the Softail that she keeps on the dolly, she can move it into place, mount & unmount it by herself, We should have bought this a long time ago. Works Flawlessly, about 45 minutes installation.

Comments about Pittsburgh Motorcycle 1250 lb. Capacity Low Profile Motorcycle Dolly:

Solid construction parts. I'd prefer the bolts to be more heavy duty. Instructions are bad but not needed - if you cant figure it out - you shouldn't have a bike to begin with. Ultra Harley fits fine. The kickstand is adjustable to fit - measure first then attach. Organize the bolts prior to assembly. Assembly takes about 45 minutes with 1 person. Moves easily across garage into any position. You still have to put some muscle into it. Ultra is 900lbs... fits and works fine...

Comments about Pittsburgh Motorcycle 1250 lb. Capacity Low Profile Motorcycle Dolly:

2005 Softail Deluxe fits fine on this dolly. Cannot use the stop pin for the front tire, but have one in the back. Bike rolls onto dolly without any problems (dolly stayed secure to the floor). After bike was on dolly, was able to roll with just a little effort (nothing extreme). Was able to move the bike around freely. Highly recommend for the price.
