Went to the local outozone to rent/borrow one of their compression testers, showing comp at 60pounds. I didn't think tha that was right, even on one fresh cylinder. Went to HF and picked this unit up and took it home. Pulled first plug comp was 90, the rest were in the upper 80's. Looks like the rent a tool was a piece of junk. If I believed it my motor would be in peices now getting rebuilt, for no reason, other than a faulty tool from a major parts store.

This tool is improperly designed. The tester has a check valve (Schrader valve on good models) located near the gage. This puts several feet of hose between the cylinder head and valve, increasing volume, therefore readings will be lower.I tested this tester with a $30 jobber from sears which had the proper valve location - at the end of the hose near cyl head. Results were about 90psi with this tester versus 145psi with a properly designed one. A difference enough to warrant a tear down!!!!!!

Comments about Pittsburgh Automotive Quick-Connect Compression Tester:

I bought one just to verify what the shop told me and to make sure it wasn't piston rings, using the oil trick. 3 out of 4 cylinders were 120 and the bad one was 80. For the price of this and with the infamous 20% off, how could you go wrong. I really liked that the hose screwed in and no worry about an adapter being left behind and it has a nice little case to keep it all together. Just My two cents.

Comments about Pittsburgh Automotive Quick-Connect Compression Tester:

After reading the other comments I had to log back in a give people some hope. I cannot say that the readings are low because i did not compare it to another brand, but the readings I got were in spec and consistant, as consistant is acctually the most important factor in the test

Worked perfectly. Hose is long but give it a second to build pressure. Dont forget to open the throttle completely while testing for compression.

Comments about Pittsburgh Automotive Quick-Connect Compression Tester:

Worked great. Didn't get stuck in my engine like the loaner tool from AutoZone. The hose turns with the threads so you can unscrew it for sure. I would recommend using a little anti-seize on the threads of any compression tester.

The design seems the same as all other major name brand tools. Even the location of the valve is the same on all the other brands that I was able to find so I'm not quite sure what the whole fuzz is about the length of the hose and the location of the valve. Even the higher priced name brand tools have the same valve location.
